Blooming Onion

Ingredients
- 1 large onion
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Peel the onion and cut off the top, leaving the root intact.
- Using a sharp knife, make 4 vertical cuts around the onion, dividing it into 8 equal wedges, but leaving the root end intact.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
- Dip the onion into the milk mixture, then coat it with the seasoned flour, making sure to get in between the petals.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully lower the coated onion into the hot oil and fry for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the blooming onion from the oil and let it drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Sprinkle with additional salt and paprika, if desired.
