Ingredients

  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (for dumplings)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the beef cubes in batches. Remove and set aside.
  2. Add the onions to the pot and cook until softened. Add the garlic, sweet paprika, and caraway seeds, and cook for another minute.
  3. Return the beef to the pot and add the bay leaves, beef broth, and tomato paste. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the dumplings by mixing the flour, eggs, and milk to form a soft dough. Shape the dough into small dumplings.
  5. About 30 minutes before the goulash is done, drop the dumplings into the pot and cook until they float to the surface.
  6. Remove the bay leaves and adjust the seasoning of the goulash. Serve the beef goulash with the dumplings hot.
