Bohemian Mushroom and Potato Bake (Česká houbová a bramborová zapékanka)
This traditional Czech dish, Česká houbová a bramborová zapékanka, is a hearty and comforting mushroom and potato bake that is perfect for a cozy family dinner.
Ingredients
- 500g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 400g mushrooms, sliced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 200ml heavy cream
- 100g grated cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until softened.
- Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook until they release their liquid and become golden brown. Season with salt and pepper.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish. Top with half of the mushroom mixture.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and mushrooms.
- Pour the heavy cream over the layers and sprinkle the grated cheese on top.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the bake cool for a few minutes before serving.
