Bosanska Zeljanica (bosnian Spinach Pie)
Bosanska Zeljanica, also known as Bosnian Spinach Pie, is a traditional Bosnian dish that features layers of phyllo dough filled with a savory mixture of spinach, onions, and cheese. This delicious pie is perfect for a hearty breakfast, brunch, or as a side dish for a family meal.
Ingredients
- 1 pound fresh spinach, chopped
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
- 1/2 cup cottage cheese
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 pound phyllo dough
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the chopped spinach, onion, feta cheese, cottage cheese, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
- Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the bottom of the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Spoon half of the spinach mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo dough on top of the spinach mixture, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Spoon the remaining spinach mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Layer the remaining 8 sheets of phyllo dough on top, again brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Using a sharp knife, score the top layer of phyllo dough into squares or diamonds.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the phyllo dough is golden brown and crispy.
- Allow the zeljanica to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
