Braised Beef Brisket with Potatoes (土豆炖牛腩)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef brisket, cut into chunks
  • 3 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 piece ginger (about 2 inches), sliced
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • 5 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and ginger. Cook until aromatic.
  2. Add the beef brisket chunks and sear until browned on all sides.
  3. Pour in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sprinkle with sugar. Stir well to coat the beef.
  4. Add the star anise, cinnamon sticks, and five-spice powder. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 1.5 hours until the beef is tender.
  6. Add the potatoes to the pot and continue to simmer for another 30 minutes until the potatoes are soft and the beef is fully cooked.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve the braised beef brisket with potatoes hot, garnished with chopped green onions if desired.
