Braised Beef with Scallions (葱烧牛肉)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef brisket, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup scallions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp five-spice powder
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ginger and garlic, and stir-fry until fragrant.
  2. Add beef chunks to the pot and brown on all sides.
  3. Pour in soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, sugar, and five-spice powder. Stir to coat the beef.
  4. Add scallions and beef broth to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot with steamed rice.
