Braised Beef with Tofu Skin (焖牛肉豆皮)

Ingredients

  • 500g beef, cut into cubes
  • 100g dried tofu skin
  • 3 slices of ginger
  • 2 scallions, cut into sections
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 cups water

Instructions

  1. Soak the dried tofu skin in water until softened, then cut into large pieces.
  2. Heat the cooking oil in a pot and sauté the ginger and scallions until fragrant.
  3. Add the beef cubes and cook until browned.
  4. Pour in the Shaoxing wine, light soy sauce, and dark soy sauce. Stir well.
  5. Add the sugar, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Pour in the water and bring to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for 1.5 hours until the beef is tender.
  7. Add the tofu skin and continue to simmer for another 30 minutes.
  8. Season with salt if needed, then serve hot.
