Brazilian Pastel

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup ground beef
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 1/2 cup diced bell peppers
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Vegetable oil for deep-frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the water and vegetable oil, mixing until a smooth dough forms. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onions, and bell peppers until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the filling to cool.
  3. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a thin circle on a floured surface.
  4. Place a spoonful of the beef filling and a sprinkle of cheese on one half of each dough circle. Fold the other half over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then press the edges firmly to seal.
  5. In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the pastels in batches and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.
