Brazilian Pastel
Brazilian pastel is a popular street food in Brazil, consisting of a crispy, deep-fried pastry filled with various savory fillings. It's a delicious and versatile snack that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a light meal.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 cup ground beef
- 1/2 cup diced onions
- 1/2 cup diced bell peppers
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Vegetable oil for deep-frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the water and vegetable oil, mixing until a smooth dough forms. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onions, and bell peppers until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the filling to cool.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a thin circle on a floured surface.
- Place a spoonful of the beef filling and a sprinkle of cheese on one half of each dough circle. Fold the other half over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then press the edges firmly to seal.
- In a deep pot or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the pastels in batches and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.
