Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup fruit jam of your choice
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Flatten each portion and place a spoonful of fruit jam in the center. Seal the dough around the jam to form a ball.
  5. Place the filled dough balls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the Buchteln for 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
