Budae Jjigae Army Stew (부대찌개)
부대찌개 (Budae Jjigae), also known as Army Stew, is a popular Korean stew that originated during the Korean War. It is a fusion dish that combines Korean and American ingredients, such as spam, hot dogs, and baked beans, with traditional Korean flavors.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup kimchi
- 1/2 cup sliced spam
- 1/2 cup sliced sausage or hot dogs
- 1/2 cup baked beans
- 1/2 cup tofu, sliced
- 2 cups chicken or beef broth
- 1/4 cup gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup sliced onion
- 1/2 cup sliced scallions
- 1/2 cup sliced American cheese
- Instant ramen noodles
Instructions
- In a large stew pot, combine the kimchi, spam, sausage, baked beans, tofu, broth, gochujang, soy sauce, garlic, and sesame oil.
- Bring the stew to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Add the mushrooms, onion, and scallions to the stew and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
- Add the American cheese slices and instant ramen noodles, and cook for another 5 minutes until the noodles are cooked.
- Serve the Budae Jjigae hot, directly from the pot.
