Burek (savory Cheese Pie)
Burek is a traditional savory cheese pie from Romani cuisine that is made with flaky phyllo dough and a delicious cheese filling. This recipe is perfect for a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 1 1/2 cups feta cheese, crumbled
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1/4 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the feta cheese, ricotta cheese, eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the bottom of the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter and sprinkling with breadcrumbs.
- Spread the cheese mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Layer another 10 sheets of phyllo dough on top of the cheese mixture, brushing each sheet with melted butter and sprinkling with breadcrumbs.
- Score the top of the burek into squares or triangles with a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Allow the burek to cool for a few minutes before serving.
