Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and water until warm (120°F to 130°F).
  3. Add the warm liquid to the dry ingredients and beat well.
  4. Stir in the softened butter, egg, and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.
  7. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  8. Punch the dough down and divide it into 12 portions.
  9. Shape each portion into a ball and place in a greased 9-inch square baking pan.
  10. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  11. Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Remove from the pan and cool on wire racks.
