Cabbage Rolls (sizzling Sarmale)
Cabbage Rolls, also known as Sizzling Sarmale, are a traditional dish in Palatine cuisine. These savory rolls are filled with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, then simmered in a tangy tomato sauce. They are a comforting and satisfying meal that is perfect for sharing with family and friends.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups beef broth
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes, until they are pliable. Remove and set aside to cool.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll it up, tucking in the sides as you go. Place the rolls seam side down in a large pot.
- Pour the crushed tomatoes and beef broth over the cabbage rolls. Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 1.5-2 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Serve the cabbage rolls hot, spooning some of the tomato sauce over the top.
