Cabbage Rolls (sărmăluțe Cu Varză)
Cabbage rolls, known as Sărmăluțe cu varză in Moldovan cuisine, are a delicious and comforting dish made with cabbage leaves stuffed with a flavorful mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices. This traditional recipe is a staple in Moldovan households and is perfect for a hearty family meal or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Boil a large pot of water. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then remove and set aside to cool.
- In a bowl, mix the ground pork, uncooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center. Roll the leaf, tucking in the sides, to form a neat roll. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Place the cabbage rolls in a large pot and pour the tomato sauce over them. Add enough water to cover the rolls. Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 1 hour, or until the rice is fully cooked and the meat is tender.
- Serve the cabbage rolls hot, spooning the tomato sauce over the top.
