Calzone Napoletano (neapolitan-style Calzone)
Calzone Napoletano, or Neapolitan-style calzone, is a traditional Italian dish hailing from the city of Naples. This delicious folded pizza is filled with a variety of savory ingredients and baked to perfection.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pizza dough
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
- 1/4 cup marinara sauce
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Divide the pizza dough into 4 equal portions and roll each portion into a 1/4-inch thick circle.
- In a large bowl, combine the ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, pepperoni, mushrooms, basil, and marinara sauce.
- Place a portion of the filling on one half of each dough circle, leaving a border around the edge.
- Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg, then fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal.
- Transfer the calzones to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg, and cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and crispy.
- Let the calzones cool for a few minutes before serving.
