Calzone Napoletano, or Neapolitan-style calzone, is a traditional Italian dish hailing from the city of Naples. This delicious folded pizza is filled with a variety of savory ingredients and baked to perfection.

Calzone Napoletano (neapolitan-style Calzone)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Divide the pizza dough into 4 equal portions and roll each portion into a 1/4-inch thick circle.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, pepperoni, mushrooms, basil, and marinara sauce.
  4. Place a portion of the filling on one half of each dough circle, leaving a border around the edge.
  5. Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg, then fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal.
  6. Transfer the calzones to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg, and cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let the calzones cool for a few minutes before serving.
