Cape Malay Samoosas are a popular South African snack that is loved for its delicious filling and crispy pastry. These samoosas are filled with a fragrant and flavorful mixture of spiced meat or vegetables, wrapped in a thin pastry, and then deep-fried until golden and crispy.

Cape Malay Samoosas

Ingredients

  • 500g minced beef or vegetables
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 20 sheets of samoosa pastry
  • Vegetable oil for deep-frying

Instructions

  1. In a large pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until soft and translucent.
  2. Add the minced beef or vegetables to the pan and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in the curry powder, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes until the spices are fragrant.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the filling to cool.
  5. Take one sheet of samoosa pastry and place a spoonful of the filling at one end. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle, then continue folding to the end of the pastry sheet. Seal the edge with a flour and water paste.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer. Deep-fry the samoosas in batches until they are golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove the samoosas from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve the samoosas hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
