Caraway Seed Bread (Kmínový chlieb)
Kmínový chlieb, or Caraway Seed Bread, is a traditional Slovak bread that is flavored with aromatic caraway seeds. This bread is perfect for serving alongside hearty stews or soups, or simply enjoyed on its own with a spread of butter.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons caraway seeds
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Stir in the salt, caraway seeds, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 6-8 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 35-40 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
