Celje Cheese and Spinach Strudel (Celjski Sirni in Špinačni Štruklji)
Celjski Sirni in Špinačni Štruklji, also known as Celje Cheese and Spinach Strudel, is a traditional Slovenian dish that combines the richness of cheese with the freshness of spinach, all wrapped in a delicate pastry. This savory strudel is perfect for a comforting family meal or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh spinach, washed and chopped
- 250g cottage cheese
- 200g sour cream
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
- 50g butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the chopped spinach, cottage cheese, sour cream, egg, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until well combined.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Place one sheet of phyllo pastry on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Repeat with 4 more sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
- Spread the spinach and cheese filling evenly over the pastry sheets, leaving a border around the edges.
- Roll the pastry and filling into a log, tucking in the edges as you roll. Place the strudel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down.
- Brush the top of the strudel with melted butter and make a few shallow cuts on top to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and crispy.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
