Celje Cheese and Spinach Strudel (Celjski Sirni in Špinačni Štruklji)

Ingredients

  • 500g fresh spinach, washed and chopped
  • 250g cottage cheese
  • 200g sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
  • 50g butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the chopped spinach, cottage cheese, sour cream, egg, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until well combined.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  3. Place one sheet of phyllo pastry on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Repeat with 4 more sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
  4. Spread the spinach and cheese filling evenly over the pastry sheets, leaving a border around the edges.
  5. Roll the pastry and filling into a log, tucking in the edges as you roll. Place the strudel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down.
  6. Brush the top of the strudel with melted butter and make a few shallow cuts on top to allow steam to escape.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
