Baklava is a popular dessert in Montenegrin cuisine, and this recipe adds a local twist by incorporating Cetinje honey and walnuts for a delightful flavor.

Cetinje Honey And Walnut Baklava

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Cetinje honey
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the Cetinje honey. Set aside to cool.
  3. In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts with cinnamon.
  4. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with more butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle half of the nut mixture over the layered phyllo dough. Top with 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining nut mixture over the phyllo dough. Top with the remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
  7. Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  9. Remove from the oven and immediately pour the cooled honey syrup over the hot baklava.
  10. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
