Chamorro Custard (latiya)
Chamorro Custard, also known as Latiya, is a popular dessert in the Mariana Islands. This creamy and sweet custard is a delightful treat that is perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 6 eggs
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
- 1 loaf white bread, crusts removed and cut into cubes
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Add the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook over medium heat until the sugar caramelizes and turns golden brown.
- Pour the caramelized sugar into a 9x13 inch baking dish, tilting the dish to evenly coat the bottom.
- Arrange the bread cubes in the baking dish. Sprinkle with raisins if desired.
- Pour the egg and milk mixture over the bread, making sure to soak the bread evenly.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
