Char Siew Bao Bonanza

Ingredients

  • 500g char siew (barbecue pork), diced
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 12 pieces of store-bought or homemade steamed bun dough

Instructions

  1. In a pan, combine the diced char siew, oyster sauce, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and five-spice powder. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the water and cornstarch to create a slurry. Add the slurry to the char siew mixture and cook until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Divide the steamed bun dough into 12 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a small disc and place a spoonful of the char siew filling in the center. Gather the edges and pleat to seal the bun.
  4. Place each filled bun on a square of parchment paper and steam for 15 minutes.
  5. Serve the Char Siew Bao hot and enjoy!
