Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup milk
- Red food coloring
- Blue food coloring
- White frosting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually beat in the flour mixture, alternating with the milk, until just blended.
- Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls. Tint one bowl of batter with red food coloring, and another with blue food coloring, leaving the third bowl white.
- Spoon a small amount of each colored batter into the prepared cake pans, creating a checkerboard pattern.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the cakes are completely cooled, assemble the layers with white frosting between each layer, and frost the top and sides of the cake.
