Cheese Pierogi (Tvarohové pirohy)
Tvarohové pirohy, also known as cheese pierogi, are a traditional Slovak dish that is loved for its delicious filling and versatile flavors. These dumplings are perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special celebration.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 pound tvaroh (Slovakian quark cheese)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the egg and water, and knead the dough until smooth. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, combine the tvaroh, sugar, and vanilla extract to make the filling.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out circles using a glass or a cookie cutter.
- Place a spoonful of the cheese filling in the center of each circle, then fold the dough over and seal the edges.
- Boil the pierogi in a large pot of salted water for 5-7 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- In a separate pan, melt the butter and toast the bread crumbs until golden brown.
- Serve the pierogi with the toasted bread crumbs on top.
