Cheese Spaetzle (Käsespätzle)

Käsespätzle, also known as cheese spaetzle, is a traditional Bavarian dish that is a delicious combination of soft egg noodles and melted cheese. This comforting and hearty dish is perfect for a cozy family meal or a gathering with friends.

Cheese Spaetzle (Käsespätzle)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup grated Emmental cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup fried onions (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, eggs, milk, salt, and nutmeg to form a smooth, thick batter.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Using a spaetzle maker or a colander with large holes, press the batter into the boiling water to form small dumplings.
  3. Cook the spaetzle for 2-3 minutes or until they float to the surface, then remove them with a slotted spoon and transfer to a colander to drain.
  4. Layer the cooked spaetzle in a baking dish with the grated cheeses, repeating until all the spaetzle and cheese are used up.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the Käsespätzle for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. If desired, sprinkle fried onions on top before serving.
