Chemeen Curry (coorgi Style Prawn Curry)
Chemeen Curry, also known as Coorgi Style Prawn Curry, is a traditional dish from the Kodava Cuisine of Karnataka, India. This flavorful and aromatic curry is a perfect blend of spices and coconut, making it a delightful dish for seafood lovers.
Ingredients
- 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1/2 cup water
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add grated coconut, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the coconut turns golden brown.
- Now, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, green chilies, and curry leaves. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the cleaned prawns, salt, and water. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes on medium heat.
- Once the prawns are cooked and the curry thickens, remove from heat.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or appam.
