Chemeen Curry (kodava Style Prawn Curry)
Chemeen Curry, also known as Kodava Style Prawn Curry, is a traditional dish from the Kodava Cuisine of Karnataka, India. This flavorful prawn curry is made with a blend of aromatic spices and coconut milk, creating a rich and creamy dish that pairs perfectly with steamed rice or neer dosa.
Ingredients
- 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add curry leaves, chopped onions, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Add the cleaned prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes until they turn pink.
- Pour in the coconut milk and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the curry thickens.
- Once the prawns are cooked through and the curry reaches the desired consistency, remove from heat.
