Chemeen Curry, also known as Kodava Style Prawn Curry, is a traditional dish from the Kodava Cuisine of Karnataka, India. This flavorful prawn curry is made with a blend of aromatic spices and coconut milk, creating a rich and creamy dish that pairs perfectly with steamed rice or neer dosa.

Chemeen Curry (kodava Style Prawn Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add curry leaves, chopped onions, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  2. Add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  3. Add the cleaned prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes until they turn pink.
  4. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the curry thickens.
  5. Once the prawns are cooked through and the curry reaches the desired consistency, remove from heat.
