Chicken Biryani (tatar Style Chicken Biryani)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 lb chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 cup chopped mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat the cooking oil and add the cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, and whole cloves. Sauté until fragrant.
  3. Add the sliced onions and cook until golden brown.
  4. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, and cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Stir in the chicken pieces and cook until they are no longer pink.
  6. Next, add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric, red chili powder, salt, plain yogurt, chopped cilantro, and mint leaves. Cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Pour in the water and bring to a boil.
  8. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes or until the rice and chicken are fully cooked.
  9. Fluff the biryani with a fork and serve hot.
