Chicken Cafreal Biryani Casserole is a delicious fusion dish that combines the flavors of Goan Catholic Cuisine with the aromatic spices of biryani. This casserole is a perfect blend of tender chicken marinated in a vibrant green masala, layered with fragrant basmati rice, and baked to perfection.

Chicken Cafreal Biryani Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 kg chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 cups basmati rice, soaked for 30 minutes
  • 1 bunch coriander leaves
  • 1 bunch mint leaves
  • 6-8 green chilies
  • 1-inch ginger
  • 8-10 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp black peppercorns
  • 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 4-5 cloves
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • Fried onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Grind coriander leaves, mint leaves, green chilies, ginger, garlic, cumin seeds, black peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves, yogurt, lemon juice, and salt to a smooth paste to make the cafreal marinade.
  2. Marinate the chicken pieces with the cafreal marinade and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  3. In a large pot, heat oil and sauté the sliced onions until golden brown. Add the marinated chicken and cook until the chicken is tender.
  4. In a separate pot, parboil the soaked basmati rice with some whole spices (cumin seeds, cinnamon, cloves) and salt. Drain and keep aside.
  5. Layer the cooked chicken at the bottom of a casserole dish, followed by a layer of parboiled rice. Repeat the layers and top with fried onions.
  6. Cover the casserole dish and cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes or until the flavors are well infused.
  7. Serve the Chicken Cafreal Biryani Casserole hot with raita and salad.
