Chicken Caldeen is a traditional Goan Catholic dish that features tender chicken cooked in a flavorful coconut milk-based gravy. This dish is known for its mild and creamy curry, making it a popular choice for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 kg chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3-4 green chilies, slit
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2-3 sprigs of curry leaves
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add chopped onions, green chilies, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the chicken pieces, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the chicken is lightly browned.
- Pour in the coconut milk and add curry leaves. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Cover the pan and cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the gravy thickens.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed and serve hot with steamed rice or bread.
