Chicken Gassi
Chicken Gassi is a traditional dish from the Mangalurean Catholic Cuisine, known for its rich and flavorful coconut-based gravy. This dish is a perfect blend of spices and coconut, creating a delicious and aromatic curry that pairs perfectly with steamed rice or neer dosa.
Ingredients
- 1 kg chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 1-inch ginger, chopped
- 4-5 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp coriander seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- In a blender, combine grated coconut, ginger, garlic, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Blend into a smooth paste by adding a little water if needed.
- Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until it turns soft and mushy.
- Add the chicken pieces and sauté for a few minutes until they are sealed and lightly browned.
- Pour in the coconut spice paste and mix well with the chicken. Add salt to taste.
- Cover the pan and let the chicken cook in the coconut gravy for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is tender and the gravy thickens.
- Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
