Chicken Gassi

Chicken Gassi is a traditional dish from the Mangalurean Catholic Cuisine, known for its rich and flavorful coconut-based gravy. This dish is a perfect blend of spices and coconut, creating a delicious and aromatic curry that pairs perfectly with steamed rice or neer dosa.

Chicken Gassi

Ingredients

  • 1 kg chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1-inch ginger, chopped
  • 4-5 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a blender, combine grated coconut, ginger, garlic, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Blend into a smooth paste by adding a little water if needed.
  2. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  3. Add the chopped tomato and cook until it turns soft and mushy.
  4. Add the chicken pieces and sauté for a few minutes until they are sealed and lightly browned.
  5. Pour in the coconut spice paste and mix well with the chicken. Add salt to taste.
  6. Cover the pan and let the chicken cook in the coconut gravy for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is tender and the gravy thickens.
  7. Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
