Chimney Cake (hungarian Kürtőskalács)
Chimney Cake, also known as Hungarian Kürtőskalács, is a traditional sweet pastry from Eastern European cuisine. It is made by wrapping dough around a wooden or metal cylinder and then baking it over an open flame, giving it a crispy caramelized exterior and a soft, fluffy interior.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 ounce active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar for coating
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Pour the yeast mixture and melted butter into the flour mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Divide the dough into 6 equal parts and roll each part into a long rope.
- Wrap the dough ropes around metal or wooden cylinders, pressing the ends to seal.
- Roll the wrapped dough in the granulated sugar to coat.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before carefully sliding the chimney cakes off the cylinders.
