Climbing Perch Fish Curry (koi Maach Bhuna)
Climbing Perch Fish Curry, also known as Koi Maach Bhuna, is a popular dish in Sylheti cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic fish curry is a staple in many households and is best enjoyed with steamed rice or flatbread.
Ingredients
- 4 climbing perch fish (koi maach), cleaned and cut into pieces
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 tablespoons mustard oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add more oil if needed and sauté the chopped onions until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and cook for a few minutes.
- Stir in the tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
- Add the fried fish pieces to the masala and coat them well. Cook for a few minutes.
- Pour in 1-2 cups of water, cover the pan, and simmer until the fish is cooked through and the curry reaches your desired consistency.
- Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
