Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the butter and brown sugar until creamy. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into 2 equal parts, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  6. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use gingerbread house templates to cut out the pieces for the house.
  7. Place the cut-out pieces on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until firm.
  8. Let the pieces cool completely before assembling the gingerbread house.
