Cottage Cheese Curry (chhena Kheeri Jhola)
Cottage Cheese Curry, also known as Chhena Kheeri Jhola, is a traditional Oriya dish that is creamy, flavorful, and satisfying. This vegetarian curry is made with fresh cottage cheese (chhena) and a rich, spiced gravy. It's a perfect dish to serve with steamed rice or Indian bread.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh cottage cheese (chhena), crumbled
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the tomato puree and cook until the ghee separates.
- Whisk the yogurt and add it to the pan along with turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
- Add the crumbled cottage cheese and mix well. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
