Cottage Cheese Curry (chhena Kheeri Jhola)

Cottage Cheese Curry, also known as Chhena Kheeri Jhola, is a traditional Oriya dish that is creamy, flavorful, and satisfying. This vegetarian curry is made with fresh cottage cheese (chhena) and a rich, spiced gravy. It's a perfect dish to serve with steamed rice or Indian bread.

Ingredients

  • 500g fresh cottage cheese (chhena), crumbled
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the tomato puree and cook until the ghee separates.
  3. Whisk the yogurt and add it to the pan along with turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes.
  4. Add the crumbled cottage cheese and mix well. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
