Creamy Spinach Dal (ಪಾಲಕ್ ದಾಲ್)

Creamy Spinach Dal (ಪಾಲಕ್ ದಾಲ್)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 3 cups chopped spinach
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter) or oil

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook the toor dal with turmeric powder and water until soft.
  2. In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dry red chilies. Once the seeds splutter, add the onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chili, and sauté for a minute. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  4. Add the chopped spinach and cook until it wilts.
  5. Add the cooked dal to the spinach mixture and mix well. Add salt to taste.
  6. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer for a few minutes until the flavors are well combined.
  7. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
