Creamy Spinach Dal (ಪಾಲಕ್ ದಾಲ್)
This creamy spinach dal, known as ಪಾಲಕ್ ದಾಲ್ in Udupi cuisine, is a comforting and nutritious dish that is perfect for a wholesome meal. It combines the goodness of spinach with the heartiness of lentils, making it a favorite among both kids and adults.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 3 cups chopped spinach
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chili, slit
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 2-3 dry red chilies
- 1/4 cup coconut milk
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter) or oil
Instructions
- Pressure cook the toor dal with turmeric powder and water until soft.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dry red chilies. Once the seeds splutter, add the onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chili, and sauté for a minute. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Add the chopped spinach and cook until it wilts.
- Add the cooked dal to the spinach mixture and mix well. Add salt to taste.
- Pour in the coconut milk and simmer for a few minutes until the flavors are well combined.
- Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
