Crispy Fried Shandong Style Tofu

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, drained and cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, coat the tofu cubes with cornstarch.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes per side. Transfer the fried tofu to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
  4. Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a separate pan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant. Pour in the soy sauce mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add the fried tofu to the sauce, tossing to coat evenly. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve hot.
