Croatian Cherry Strudel (Hrvatski štrudel od trešanja)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups pitted cherries
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 8 sheets phyllo dough
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the pitted cherries, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon.
  3. Place one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Sprinkle with bread crumbs.
  4. Repeat the process with the remaining phyllo sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
  5. Spoon the cherry mixture along the long edge of the phyllo stack, leaving some space at the edges.
  6. Roll up the phyllo stack, tucking in the edges as you roll to enclose the filling.
  7. Place the strudel on a baking sheet, seam side down, and brush the top with melted butter.
