Daal Ka Saalan (lentil Stew)
Daal Ka Saalan is a traditional lentil stew from Saraiki Cuisine, known for its rich and aromatic flavors. This hearty dish is perfect for a comforting meal, especially during the colder months.
Ingredients
- 1 cup split red lentils
- 2 tablespoons ghee
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- 1 teaspoon garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Wash the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in ginger and garlic paste, then add the chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pot. Stir to combine with the spices.
- Pour in water and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 45-50 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
