Daal Ka Saalan (lentil Stew)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split red lentils
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Stir in ginger and garlic paste, then add the chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  6. Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pot. Stir to combine with the spices.
  7. Pour in water and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 45-50 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
