Daal Shorba (spiced Lentil Soup)
Daal Shorba is a traditional Pashtun lentil soup that is packed with aromatic spices and flavors. This comforting and nutritious soup is perfect for a cozy night in or as a starter for a special meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Add the chopped tomato, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add the rinsed lentils and water to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30-35 minutes, or until the lentils are fully cooked.
- Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the soup to a blender and blend in batches.
- Season with salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
