Dal Makhani (creamy Dal Makhani)
Dal Makhani, also known as creamy dal makhani, is a popular Indian dish made with black lentils, red kidney beans, and a rich, creamy tomato-based sauce. This indulgent and flavorful dish is a staple in North Indian cuisine and is often enjoyed with rice or naan.
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole black lentils
- 1/4 cup red kidney beans
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 tomatoes, pureed
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Wash the black lentils and kidney beans, then soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Pressure cook the soaked lentils and beans with salt and enough water until they are soft and well-cooked.
- Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes, then add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates.
- Add the cooked lentils and beans to the tomato mixture, along with red chili powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala. Mix well and simmer for 30 minutes.
- Stir in the heavy cream and cook for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.
