Dal Shorba (creamy Lentil Soup)
Dal Shorba is a popular Bangladeshi creamy lentil soup that is packed with flavors and nutrition. This comforting soup is perfect for a cozy night in or as a starter for a special meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils and place them in a pot with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until onions are golden brown.
- Add tomatoes, turmeric, coriander, and red chili powder. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add the cooked lentils to the tomato mixture and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, transfer the soup to a blender and blend in batches.
- Return the soup to the pot, stir in the heavy cream, and season with salt. Simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with a drizzle of cream and a sprinkle of fresh coriander leaves.
