Dal Shorba (spiced Lentil Soup)
Dal Shorba, also known as Spiced Lentil Soup, is a popular dish in Anglo-Indian cuisine. This flavorful and comforting soup is made with lentils and a blend of aromatic spices, making it a perfect choice for a hearty meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Add the diced tomatoes, turmeric, garam masala, and chili powder. Cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and fully cooked.
- Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the soup to a blender and blend in batches.
- Season with salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
