Dal Shorba (spiced Lentil Soup)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Add the chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, turmeric, garam masala, and chili powder. Cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Add the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and fully cooked.
  6. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the soup to a blender and blend in batches.
  7. Season with salt to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
