Danish Onion Tart (Løgtærte)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press the dough into a 9-inch tart pan. Chill in the refrigerator while preparing the filling.
  3. In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Spoon the caramelized onions into the prepared tart crust. Pour the egg and cream mixture over the onions.
  6. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  7. Allow the tart to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
