Danish Spiced Wine (Gløgg)

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon of cardamom seeds
  • 1/2 cup of raisins
  • 1/2 cup of blanched almonds

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and cardamom seeds to the saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Pour in the red wine and heat until steaming, but not boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and let the gløgg sit for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Before serving, strain the gløgg to remove the spices. Stir in the raisins and almonds.
