Dawood Basha is a classic Lebanese dish of meatballs cooked in a rich tomato sauce. This comforting and flavorful dish is perfect for a family dinner or a gathering with friends.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp allspice
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp sugar
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, onion, garlic, parsley, breadcrumbs, egg, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into meatballs.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, and sugar. Stir to combine.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, spooning the tomato sauce over them. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through.
- Serve the meatballs and sauce hot, with rice or pita bread on the side.
