Dawood Basha (yemeni Spiced Lamb Meatballs)
Dawood Basha is a traditional Yemeni dish featuring spiced lamb meatballs in a rich tomato sauce. This flavorful and aromatic dish is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering.
Ingredients
- 500g ground lamb
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup beef or lamb broth
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the ground lamb, onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Shape the mixture into meatballs.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, broth, tomato paste, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let them simmer in the sauce for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through.
- Serve the meatballs and sauce hot, accompanied by rice or flatbread.
