Dawood Basha (yemeni Spiced Lamb Meatballs)

Ingredients

  • 500g ground lamb
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground lamb, onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Shape the mixture into meatballs.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, broth, tomato paste, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
  4. Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let them simmer in the sauce for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through.
  5. Serve the meatballs and sauce hot, accompanied by rice or flatbread.
