Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup lard
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 12 pieces banana leaves, softened
  • 1 lb pork shoulder, cooked and shredded
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the masa harina, chicken broth, lard, baking powder, and salt to form a smooth dough.
  2. Spread the masa onto the softened banana leaves, then add a spoonful of the shredded pork filling in the center.
  3. Fold the banana leaves to form a packet, then tie with kitchen twine.
  4. In a large pot, arrange the tamales and steam for 1 hour.
  5. Let the tamales cool for a few minutes before serving.
