Delicious Dhalle Pite

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of lentils
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package of store-bought puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a pot, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the lentils are tender. Drain any excess water and set aside.
  2. In a skillet, sauté the onion and garlic until softened. Add the cooked lentils, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into two equal-sized rectangles.
  4. Place one rectangle of pastry on a baking sheet. Spoon the lentil filling onto the pastry, leaving a border around the edges. Brush the edges with the beaten egg.
  5. Place the second rectangle of pastry on top and press the edges together to seal. Brush the top with the remaining beaten egg.
  6. Using a sharp knife, make a few small slits in the top pastry to allow steam to escape during baking.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and flaky.
  8. Let the Dhalle Pite cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
