Delicious Dhalle Pite
Dhalle Pite is a traditional Albanian dish that is loved for its delicious flavors and comforting warmth. This savory pie is made with a flavorful filling of lentils and is encased in a flaky pastry crust, making it a perfect dish for a cozy family dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of lentils
- 4 cups of water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of cumin
- 1 teaspoon of paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 package of store-bought puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a pot, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the lentils are tender. Drain any excess water and set aside.
- In a skillet, sauté the onion and garlic until softened. Add the cooked lentils, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let the filling cool.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into two equal-sized rectangles.
- Place one rectangle of pastry on a baking sheet. Spoon the lentil filling onto the pastry, leaving a border around the edges. Brush the edges with the beaten egg.
- Place the second rectangle of pastry on top and press the edges together to seal. Brush the top with the remaining beaten egg.
- Using a sharp knife, make a few small slits in the top pastry to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and flaky.
- Let the Dhalle Pite cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
