Delicious Pongal

Pongal is a traditional South Indian dish made with rice, lentils, and spices. It is a delicious and comforting dish that is often prepared during the harvest festival in Tamil Nadu.

Delicious Pongal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup split yellow moong dal
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 2-3 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)

Instructions

  1. Wash the rice and dal together and set aside.
  2. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  3. Add the washed rice and dal to the boiling water and stir well.
  4. Add cumin seeds, black peppercorns, green chilies, grated ginger, and curry leaves to the pot.
  5. Cook on medium heat until the rice and dal are soft and mushy, stirring occasionally.
  6. In a separate small pan, heat ghee and add cashews. Fry until golden brown and then add asafoetida.
  7. Pour the ghee, cashew, and asafoetida mixture into the cooked rice and dal. Add salt to taste and mix well.
  8. Delicious Pongal is ready to be served hot with chutney or sambar.
