Delicious Pongal
Pongal is a traditional South Indian dish made with rice, lentils, and spices. It is a delicious and comforting dish that is often prepared during the harvest festival in Tamil Nadu.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rice
- 1/2 cup split yellow moong dal
- 4 cups water
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 2-3 green chilies, chopped
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1/4 cup cashews
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
Instructions
- Wash the rice and dal together and set aside.
- In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
- Add the washed rice and dal to the boiling water and stir well.
- Add cumin seeds, black peppercorns, green chilies, grated ginger, and curry leaves to the pot.
- Cook on medium heat until the rice and dal are soft and mushy, stirring occasionally.
- In a separate small pan, heat ghee and add cashews. Fry until golden brown and then add asafoetida.
- Pour the ghee, cashew, and asafoetida mixture into the cooked rice and dal. Add salt to taste and mix well.
- Delicious Pongal is ready to be served hot with chutney or sambar.
