Delizia Turca, also known as Turkish Delight, is a traditional sweet treat from Southern European cuisine. This delectable confection is made with a combination of sugar, water, and cornstarch, flavored with rose water and often studded with nuts or dried fruits. It's a delightful dessert that is perfect for sharing with friends and family.
Ingredients
- 4 cups granulated sugar
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons rose water
- 1 cup chopped pistachios or almonds (optional)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar, for coating
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, combine the sugar and 2 cups of water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
- In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch with the remaining 2 cups of water until smooth.
- Gradually pour the cornstarch mixture into the saucepan, stirring constantly.
- Add the lemon juice and cream of tartar to the mixture.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until it thickens and turns a light golden color (about 1 hour).
- Remove from heat and stir in the rose water and chopped nuts, if using.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 9x9 inch pan and smooth the top. Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Once set, cut the Turkish Delight into small squares and toss them in powdered sugar to coat.
- Store the Turkish Delight in an airtight container, layered between sheets of wax paper, in a cool, dry place.
